Below, you can find some of the most popular tattoo styles and their features. Whether you want a black and white design with clear lines or a creative piece full of vibrant colors – I am ready to turn your dream style into reality.
Black & Grey Tattoos
Black & Grey style tattoos are a classic and timeless style made using only black ink and grey shading. Since color is not used, contrast, shading, and fine details are created using different shades of black. Often preferred for designs like portrait, landscape, or text, black and grey tattoos, when applied correctly, are extremely striking and long-lasting. Many concepts, traditional or realistic, can be successfully applied with black & grey.
Fine Line Tattoos
Fine Line tattoos, as the name suggests, rely on precise lines made with extremely thin needles. They are ideal for minimalist designs, small figures, text, or delicate details. Shading is used minimally or not at all, which results in a very clean, simple, and modern look. Fine line tattoos are very popular today, perfect for those seeking aesthetic simplicity. Due to their delicate nature, extra care may be required during the healing process (for example, protecting them from direct sunlight).
Watercolor Tattoos
Watercolor tattoos are characterized by soft transitions and vibrant colors, resembling watercolor paintings on canvas. This style usually lacks distinct black outlines; colors are applied to the skin with a paint-spreading-in-water effect. Flowers, abstract shapes, or artistic figures can look wonderful in the watercolor style, leaving a highly artistic and creative impression. Watercolor tattoos, when applied with the correct technique, evoke the feeling of carrying a painting on your skin. Since they are not very dark and saturated, they are generally not used for covering up old tattoos, but they are a perfect option for a first tattoo or for those wanting a colorful piece of art.
Color Realism
Color realism is the art of creating tattoos with near-photographic detail and depth. In this style, a wide color palette is used to embed a portrait, landscape, or any visual onto the skin in its most realistic form. Plays of light and shadow, combined with accurate toning, provide a three-dimensional appearance. Color realism is a great choice, especially if you want a portrait of a loved one, your favorite movie character, or a realistic animal tattoo. This style requires high skill and patience; breathtaking artworks are created by masterfully handling even the finest details. The vibrancy of color realism tattoos can be preserved for many years, but proper care, such as protecting them from direct sunlight, is important.
American Traditional (Old School)
The American Traditional tattoo style is a classic style known for thick black outlines, a limited but vibrant color palette, and simple shading. It typically includes old-school motifs such as roses, daggers, ships, eagles, and pin-up girls. The roots of this style date back to nautical tattoos and the retro tattoo culture of the 1920s–1960s. Thanks to their solid lines and bold appearance, American traditional tattoos maintain their shape and legibility even after years.
Japanese Tattoos (Irezumi)
Japanese traditional tattoo art (Irezumi) involves motifs and techniques that are part of a culture dating back centuries. Large and detailed compositions are placed in harmony with the body’s natural flow. Figures such as dragons, tigers, koi fish, samurais, cherry blossoms, and wavy water motifs are frequently used. Rich colors or only black-grey tones can be preferred in Japanese tattoos, but the visual result is impressive in both cases. Because this style focuses on creating a holistic piece covering large areas on the body, it may require multiple sessions.
Neo-Traditional
The Neo-traditional style is a modern evolution of classic American Traditional. In this style, the bold lines of traditional are preserved, while richer colors, shadows, and details are added. Modern figures can be worked on in addition to classic motifs; for example, an animal portrait can be done in a neo-traditional style with both a realistic and cartoonish feel. The color palette is broad, and vibrant color transitions and striking contrasts are characteristics of this style. Neo-traditional tattoos offer both a nostalgic and contemporary look.
Geometric Tattoos
Geometric tattoos are a modern style created with straight lines, shapes, and mathematical patterns. Shapes like triangles, circles, lines, and complex mandala motifs are frequently used. This style has a wide range, from a minimalist triangle symbol to a complex geometric pattern band wrapping the entire arm. Geometric tattoos are usually done with black ink, but colored elements can be added upon request. Since symmetry, balance, and accuracy are important, the artist must work with calculated precision.
Abstract and Artistic Tattoos
Abstract tattoos are artistic works where colors, shapes, and textures are used freely, rather than being based on a specific figure or object. In this style, the approach is akin to working on a canvas; lines resembling brushstrokes, paint splatters, stains, or shapes that simply reflect emotion may appear. Abstract tattoos are completely custom and unique pieces. This style is ideal for those who see their body as an art gallery and are looking for something more experimental beyond standard motifs.
Trash Polka
Trash Polka is an unusual and striking tattoo style. Originating in Germany, this style combines collage-like images with intense black and red colors. It typically blends photo-realism with graphic elements (brushstrokes, stains, text). The resulting work is like a chaotic but balanced piece of art. Trash Polka tattoos are known for being high-contrast, rebellious, and eye-catching. These designs, which cover large areas, are also suitable for covering an old tattoo; the strong black transitions can successfully hide underlying marks.
Cover-Up Tattoos
A Cover-up tattoo is the process of covering and transforming an existing unwanted tattoo with a new design. If you are not satisfied with an old tattoo—such as a faded design, a flawed piece of work, or a mark you no longer wish to remember—it is possible to eliminate it completely with a cover-up. For a successful result in the cover-up process, planning is very important. The new design usually has to be larger and darker than the old one because only more saturated colors and distinct lines can completely cover the dark lines and shapes underneath. A detailed consultation is held before getting a cover-up. I can apply layered techniques and, if necessary, optical illusion effects to make the old tattoo invisible. The new tattoo will be a completely fresh work of art, bearing no trace of the previous one.
